World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.

For example an item upgrade with the upgrade template ending in % will suffer an attack damage of 3% each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the item's current level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades also have specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must have been at least upgraded to the blue level in order for the component to be used. In contrast to other mods components can only be used one time; they can't be used multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix that alters the name of the equipment with which it is applied (for examplefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). The player can have up to five boost upgrades at a time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-tier version of the item will appear in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much they'll increase after a future reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process can be expensive, and there is a substantial possibility that the item will become obsolete or even break if it fails; a unsuccessful upgrade could destroy Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items that increase or even eliminate the chances of failure, as well as some upgrades that offer a bonus when reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Leveling

The upgrade system for items lets players increase the effectiveness of specific items by putting upgraded components inside them. This is referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item has an amount that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be upgraded up to a maximum level of ilvl 385. Each level of an item requires various components, and the cost of upgrading increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or purchased from some NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to upgrade the item, and once enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and its additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades an item to a higher level, the original item is replaced with a new Best item upgrade of the same kind. This means that the same armor piece will get an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will have a unique bonus. This could be a problem in that it could make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

Upgrades to items can be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do so. This causes the item to be traded for a new one, which will have a level 1 base and a completely different set of bonuses. This is a good idea however it should not be used frequently as it could waste resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled many times, increasing their value and allows the player to modify their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants a buff if the player continuously enters or leaves the water.
