Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight spaces.

If you want a smooth ride with your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that can swivel. They are susceptible, however, to punctures. Be prepared with a repair set.

Sturdy frame

New figures show that three-wheeled buggies, the symbol of the decade that were more expensive than common sense, are in rapid decline. They've been replaced with four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, while still looking swanky and being easy to push.

The bigger the wheels are the better your buggy will cope with bumpy and uneven pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front, make it easier to move and more stable when walking downhill or in difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn and a 3 wheel pushchair year old and found it coped well with grass, cobbles, rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt sturdy to push, and very stable on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasional pumping) have suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is another aspect to think about. It is important for the seat to be large enough to allow your child to feel comfortable and allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat, which allows your child to lie flat and face you, whereas others only allow a parent-facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or walking in muddy areas. It can be used as a single from the beginning and can be modified to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth until age 4 and includes a bumper and raincover, a new 5-point harness, and a large padded seat. Storage options are also good, with a large basket and zip pockets on the hood and an extra pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels give your buggy greater stability when driving over rough terrain. This is ideal for buggies designed for off-road use. They also help you navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to help you navigate around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with the speed at which they can be pushed. This is also helpful when you crash into a tree root or stray kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres. This means they can handle a variety of terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They are also lighter. They are more prone to punctures, so you'll need to have repair kits and an spare inner tube in your arsenal.

These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which she claims "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to move up and down kerbs. They also come with a suspension system that in her words "smoothes out bumps extremely effectively".

Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite large, and may struggle to fit into tight spaces. This could be problematic if you intend to use it as a jogger or you need to get through doorways that are narrow when on the move. The majority of models come with compact folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.

Easy to Manoeuvre

A three-wheel buggy can be easier to maneuver with a child. They are designed so that the front wheels be turned on a dime and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground and the swivel front wheel being particularly helpful. I was also amazed by the way it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. It was very stable in the downhills or on uneven terrain."

The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy might make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you need to keep in mind when you live in one of the cities. If this is a concern then a 4-wheeler might be a better choice for you.
