Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

The upgrade of an item allows players to raise the item level for equippable items like weapons, armor and trinkets within a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are inserted into equipment to offer attribute bonuses and extra effects. Most upgrades are slot-restricted but some are universal.

Rerolling

A player can roll an upgrade for an item in Diablo 4. This is accomplished by using the Level Up feature, which stops your game and shows four randomly-chosen upgrades. To reroll an item, players first have to unlock the Reroll Upgrade from the shop. Once the Reroll upgrade is unlocked, players can select it at the bottom of the Level Up menu. The player can reroll up to 10 times per battle. The weight of the item remains the same after rerolling but its base power and upgrades will be reset. After rolling, the item can still be enchanted.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items is an essential element of enhancing your character performance and effectiveness in battle. Upgrades to items can increase an item's stats base or add the suffix or prefix of a new item. The amount of stats that an item can upgrade depends on its rarity and mark level. There are upgrades available in raids and dungeons or buy them from vendors. You can also get them randomly or by collecting other players' loot.

There is no solution to the "not worth" feeling that some players feel when upgrading certain items. Ideally, the game would surface more information about an upgrade in its compare interface, for instance "X stats gained, X stats lost." This isn't feasible to implement due to the complexity of the process. There's not enough space in the UI to implement it correctly.

An alternative solution is to create an application that checks the requirements for upgrading an item prior to allowing it to be upgraded. This is a good option for systems with a relatively small number of upgradeable items and a few upgrade dependencies. One example of this is a sword that can be upgraded from Sword +1 to Sword +2. A script could check the Item Definition attribute for each upgrade and set an Item Status of "upgraded" to show that the upgrade was valid.

Costs

Upgrades can boost the physical power of equipment, its spell power, and health (for rings and armor) or add a bonus effect to it while in your inventory. You can acquire upgrade elements through crafting or purchase them from vendors. They can also be looted or dropped from other players, on the Trading Post, or as rewards. Upgrade components can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets. They can also be attached to gathering tools. Most upgrade components can only be replaced by an Upgrade Extractor. The exception is glyphs, which can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Based on the type of item, upgrading an item may cost Dilithium or gold. Some upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones required to upgrade an item depends on the gear's level and the maximum upgrade level is determined by Blizzard. The upgrade to the highest level can be costly particularly when you're upgrading PvE gear.

Item upgrades can also change the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size, alter its operative or unwieldy specific weapon property, or alter the requirements for hand use. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.

While boosting stats is the primary purpose of upgrades to items but you should take into consideration the cost of upgrading an item prior to making an investment. Spend your gold on rare items and not on items that are of the common or magical level. The upgrading of these items wastes precious resources, and you'll quickly find that rare gear outclasses them.

If you're uncertain about whether or not upgrading is worth it you can ask your guild members for their advice. You may be able to find better upgrades at lower costs. Make sure to upgrade your equipment as quickly as you can because upgrades become more expensive over time. However, if you're unable to afford the upgrade costs it may be better to wait until you're able to. This will allow you to maximize your potential in the game.
