Upgrades to equipment give an additional bonus to the item's stats. The amount of bonus varies based on the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components are the items that improve your armor and weapons more effective. They can be obtained by the destruction of enemies, finding them in spheres of items or buying them from karma merchants. They can also be rescued from equipment with them or by using the highest-quality salvage kits such as the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components aren't destroyed by removing them from the item.

The main function of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded, however, they also serve other functions. They can be used to boost the value of an upgradeable item, or they can be used to increase the amount of experience gained from upgrading an existing weapon or piece of equipment. They can be made for extra bonuses. A crafted glyph can increase the chance of upgrading its target while an upgrade boosts the defense or attack capabilities of the weapon.

You can attach an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show the upgrade components to which the item can be updated. You can also use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either case, the item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components have been gathered.

Each component has its own experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item gains when upgraded with that component. For instance, organic components offer more experience multipliers than mechanical ones. It is recommended to upgrade the organic components first, until you reach the next rank in the weapon or equipment, then switch to mechanical upgrades.

In addition to the multiplier of experience, each item upgrader mod also has the maximum number of upgrades that it can receive. The number of items that can be upgraded is determined by their upgradeable rank and the kind of upgrade they are able to receive. The highest upgrade possible is a weapon with tier 10. However, the most common upgrade for weapons is a tier 6 weapon and a tier 5 armor upgrade.

Sets

A set is a set of items that share the same bonus. Each item upgrader mod in the set can be upgraded at least once and the upgrade increases the guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade an item, its primary stat will be +1.
