Item upgrading allows players to increase the gear score of an item up to 700 and add a final perk. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their distinctive stats. (For example an excellently roll breakpoint armor is used in melee PvP). Other items, like weapons don't change much after an upgrade, and aren't worth the cost.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can boost their numerical stats, such as attack damage, crit probability and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons come with a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. A lot of weapons also come with a fixed bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are equipped in a unit. This bonus could exceed the damage a weapon upgrade can do on its own.

The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity and current level. For instance an item upgrader with a rating of +2 will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade the gun will increase until it needs more Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgrades to weapons can also alter the stats of their base. While this is usually an excellent thing, it can have some negative effects as well. Upgrades can make things unusable, unless you are exceptionally lucky.

Items of armor can also be upgraded to improve their stats. For example, if you upgrade chests or helms this will increase its base defense while gloves and belts improve their required strength and dexterity. Armor also has an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense percent, which means that it can sometimes change its roll to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain after upgrading, along with the values of these stats. This means that a weapon will gain an attack damage of 3% if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However, the 3% doesn't mean that it will strike for 3 times less often, since it is an absolute statistic.

Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button on the item upgrades menu with the arrows that are circling. This will reroll an item upgrader mod and alter its stats but not reset the weapon's levels, or tie it to the account status.

Armor

A few upgrades to your armor can make all the difference to your survivability. Certain sets can offer massive increases in resistance to poison, curses, fire, and magic. This can make it easier to get through difficult terrains. The more defense your character has the more value you get from each point of health you possess, so it's important to upgrade your armor as much as you can.

To upgrade your armor, head to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four fountains in all, and each requires you to complete a specific side quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. Once you've completed the primary side quest and have completed the corresponding fountain, you can then contact any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrade menu.

The amount of material needed to upgrade each piece of armor will vary. You'll need anywhere from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade the initial armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade the next one. For instance the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep pace with a good-sized group of adversaries in most cold conditions and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded all the way to +20 defense, providing you enough protection to withstand an entire raid with a few of your friends.

Be aware that armor can't be upgraded the same way as weapons, so you'll have to focus on upgrading it for physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power when you're a Mage. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you'll still wear by the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you'll wear in the final boss fight, the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

By giving the jeweler 10 Twinkling Titanite in Gerudo Town, you can gain some benefits to your armor. In general, you should keep these upgrades for the weapon you'll be using to beat the game, like the Longsword, Battleaxe or Warhammer, but it can be beneficial to have a few improvements to the helmets and chest armor that allow you to stealth around some monsters.

Potions

Potions are liquids that when consumed by the player, provide a temporary effect. There are five kinds of potions with different effects and durations. Some potions may be upgraded, enhancing their level of effect. You can also enhance the effects of certain potions by adding redstone dust and glowstone dust.

Upgrades to potion cost a certain amount of XP, which can be earned by crafting them on a table or the Alchemist's chest. However, the upgrade price changes depending on what kind of potion you wish to upgrade, and also on the item's Mark Level and Rarity.

To upgrade a potion, right-click on it in your inventory and select the "Upgrade" option from the menu. This will open an GUI which allows you to choose the potion that you wish to upgrade, and the amount of experience they'll give you when upgraded. Upgrades to potions can be made in batches of up to five at a single time, and the XP they provide will be added to your current XP total.

Once a poton is upgraded in quality, it will not deteriorate unless you make use of it again or break the bottle in which it is kept. Clicking on the potion in your inventory will allow you to change the name of the potion.

Version 1.7.2 introduced a few changes to the mechanism of potions. For instance the splash potions now have a duration of zero,08 seconds (this is not the same as 22.5 seconds shown on the hover display of the item upgrader). In general players should upgrade their top-priority items first. This usually refers to the most valuable-in-slot items for their class, then their secondaries, and finally other items of gear they won't replace in the near future (for instance an earring or cloak). When deciding on which items to upgrade players should also consider the class's preferred stats. For instance If Haste and Crit are the two most important stats for tanks, they should prioritize upgrading their chest, helm, shoulders, and belt.

Once they have become useless trinkets are able to be upgraded to a greater level. The upgraded trinket will give you an additional 1percent bonus. A re-upgrade, however, will destroy the trinket unless it can be saved using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or a higher tier salvage tool. This makes upgrading trinkets more expensive than other upgrades, but is still cheaper than purchasing an entirely new trinket.
